How Electric Vehicle Chargers Communicate with Your Car
2026-01-28

The process of charging an electric vehicle is a sophisticated digital handshake, not just a flow of electricity. Dedicated communication protocols between the Electric Vehicle Charger and the vehicle ensure safety, control the process, and optimize power delivery.

This communication happens through the control pilot wire within the charging cable. When the connector is plugged in, a small signal is sent. The vehicle responds, identifying itself and communicating its capabilities. They establish a protocol to determine the maximum amount of current the car can accept and the charger can provide. This negotiation prevents the Electric Vehicle Charger from delivering more power than the vehicle’s onboard charger or battery can handle, a fundamental safety feature. The pilot signal continuously monitors the connection; if it is interrupted (e.g., by unplugging), the Electric Vehicle Charger instantly cuts power before the connector is exposed.

For DC Fast Chargers, the communication is more complex. Because they bypass the car’s onboard charger and supply direct current, they need to communicate directly with the vehicle’s battery management system (BMS). The BMS provides vital data such as the battery’s state of charge, voltage, and temperature. The Electric Vehicle Charger uses this real-time data to dynamically adjust its power output, delivering the fastest possible charge while strictly adhering to the battery’s safety limits. This protects the battery’s health and longevity.

In advanced applications like smart charging or vehicle-to-grid (V2G), higher-level communication occurs. Using protocols like ISO 15118, the car and Electric Vehicle Charger can exchange digital certificates for automatic billing (“Plug & Charge”) or discuss detailed charging schedules based on grid signals and user preferences. This layered communication—from basic safety signals to complex data exchange—is what makes modern Electric Vehicle Chargers intelligent partners in the charging process, ensuring every kilowatt-hour is transferred safely and efficiently.
